What Is D2D Sales? Door to Door Sales Explained for New Reps

By the Direct Kinect Team. Updated October 2026.

Short answer: D2D sales means door to door sales: selling a product or service in person to people at their homes. The letters D2D are short for “door to door.” A D2D rep walks assigned neighborhoods, starts conversations with residents and signs up the households that want what is offered. In fiber, that means explaining fiber internet options.

What is D2D sales?

D2D sales is the practice of selling face to face at the door. Instead of waiting for customers to find a website or walk into a store, the rep goes to the customer. The work is common in home services and utilities, and it is how many fiber internet providers reach households that may not yet know fiber is available on their street.

If you came here searching “what is D2D” because a recruiter, a job post or a friend used the term, this is the whole idea. D2D is a sales channel, not a single company or a single product.

What does D2D mean?

The D2D meaning in sales is “door to door.” You will also see “D2D sales rep,” “D2D sales jobs” and “D2D team.” In other settings D2D can stand for other things, such as “device to device” in technology, but on a job post for sales it always means door to door.

How does D2D sales work?

A D2D day follows a simple pattern. The details change by team and market, but the shape stays the same.

  1. Team check in. You meet your team, review the current offers and plan your streets.
  2. Territory. Your team lead assigns the neighborhoods you work, so you are not guessing where to go.
  3. Conversations at the door. You knock, say who you are, ask about the household’s current internet and explain the options in plain language.
  4. Sign ups. When a household wants the service, you sign them up on a tablet or phone.
  5. Follow ups. You write down every “come back later” and return when you said you would.
  6. Wrap up. You review the day with your team and plan tomorrow.

What is D2D sales like compared with other sales jobs?

Type of sales job Where the conversation happens What it asks of you
D2D (door to door) In person at the customer’s home Comfort talking to strangers, working outdoors, handling “no” and following up
Retail sales In a store, customers come to you Product knowledge and steady store hours
Call center or inside sales By phone or chat from an office or home Phone skills and time at a desk
Online sales Through a website, email or messages Writing, marketing and screen time

The big difference is the audience. In D2D you start every conversation with someone who did not ask to hear from you, so a friendly, short opener and respect for the person’s time matter more than any script.

Why do companies still use D2D sales?

People tend to trust a real person standing in front of them more than an ad. For fiber, a rep can also answer questions on the spot, such as what fiber is and how it differs from the connection a household has now. That face to face explanation is hard to copy online. Whether D2D is right for you is a separate question, which we cover in is door to door sales worth it.

Is D2D sales legal?

Yes, door to door selling is generally legal, but rules vary by city and state. Many cities ask sellers to follow local solicitation rules, and residents can post “no soliciting” signs that reps must respect. The Federal Trade Commission also has a Cooling Off Rule for many sales made at a person’s home. According to the FTC, sellers covered by the rule must tell buyers about their right to cancel within three business days of the transaction. Always follow your team’s guidance on local rules, and ask your recruiter how this works in your market. Source: the FTC page on the Cooling Off Rule.

What does a D2D rep say at the door? A sample opener

A good opener is short, honest and easy to say no to. Here is a plain version:

“Hi, I’m Alex, I’m out today talking with neighbors about fiber internet. Quick question: who do you have for internet right now, and are you happy with it?”

Notice what it does. It says who you are and why you knocked, then asks a question instead of launching into a pitch. If the person says they are busy, you thank them, offer to come back at a better time and write it down. If they say no, you thank them and move on. Never guess at a price. Share only what the current offer says.

What skills do you need for D2D sales?

  • A friendly first sentence. Say who you are and why you knocked.
  • Plain language. Explain fiber without jargon.
  • Resilience. You will hear plenty of no answers. Each new door is a fresh start.
  • Follow through. Keep the follow ups you promised.
  • Reliability. Show up on time, work your streets and stay honest with customers and teammates.

None of these require a sales background. Read door to door sales with no experience to see how training and the first days work.

How does D2D sales pay work?

D2D sales is usually performance based rather than a traditional hourly job. Details differ by team, so ask your recruiter exactly how pay is structured, including what is paid on signup versus install. Pay details are shared during the application conversation, and earnings are not guaranteed.

Who is D2D sales for, and who is it not for?

D2D sales may be for you if:

  • You are 18 or older, have a smartphone and can work outdoors.
  • You like talking with people and can take a no without taking it personally.
  • You are coachable and want to learn a skill in the field.
  • You want a team behind you, or you are open to traveling to active fiber markets.

D2D sales may not be for you if:

  • You need a guaranteed hourly paycheck.
  • You want to work indoors at a desk.
  • You dislike talking with strangers or hearing no.
  • You are not willing to follow your team’s rules on safety and local soliciting.

What kinds of D2D fiber teams are there?

Direct Kinect places reps on three kinds of teams: the Local Team for people who want to work near home, the Summer Team for people who can travel for a season, and the Blitz Team for short, intense stretches in active markets.
